Chasity Corrigan will be starting tutoring here on Thursday - May 10/12 under the Tutoring for Work Experience Program (TWEP).   Chasity is a 4th year Education student from MUN and has tutored here in the past, with great praise from both teachers and students alike.  She can help with all the Maths and Sciences, so please  make an extra effort to avail of her expertise and time.

Math Help Center - Stella Maris Academy

The Math Help Center will be open on Day 2, 6, 10 & 13 for students in Grade 9, Math 3204 and Math 3103.  A need for such a center has been identified in these courses…other courses may be added later.  All sessions will take place in Room 202 during lunch time.  Students may bring their lunch to the classroom and any math materials they need assistance with. For more information, check with Mr. O'Brien.

TUTORING FOR TUITION

Note to Parents & Guardians:
The Tutoring for Tuition program provides Level I, II and III students with the opportunity to obtain a post-secondary tuition voucher by providing tutoring services to students from K-12 in all areas.   Parents/guardians, who feel this service would be beneficial, are asked to submit their child’s name for tutoring assistance to their homeroom teacher or Mr. Sutton (Guidance Counsellor). Tutoring services are available at the school from 2:45 – 3:45 Monday through Thursday.

Note to Tutors & Learners:
Please try to make the best of this opportunity to learn by being availabe to work with one another during the week. Those who have signed up to be tutored should make every effort to be available, likewise tutors have an equal obligation to be available to the learner.  It works best when both parties consistently communicate and co-operate.  Tutors are reminded to pass in Learning Journals (signed by both the Tutor and Learner) and Time Sheets at the end of each month.  If you have any questions or concerns, check with Mr. Sutton.

FREE GRADE 9 MATH ONLINE TUTORING is available to all Grade 9 students in the
province of Newfoundland and Labrador. The online tutor is a post secondary student who is
very qualified for this role. The program was initiated last year and has proven very

Online Tutoring Initiative - A Note to Students and Parents

Presently, all schools in Newfoundland and Labrador have access to the Tutoring for Tuition Program in a face-to-face setting which provides free tutoring to students needing academic supports.   In addition to these supports, the Centre for Distance Learning and Innovation (CDLI) offers a similar program in the online environment.  Both programs are sponsored and funded by the Department of Human Resources, Labor and Employment.

This online tutoring service will be available to all students in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador and cover most high school courses including English 1201, English 2201 and English 3201, Science 1206, Physics 2204 and Physics 3204, Chemistry 2202 and Chemistry 3202, Biology 2201 and Biology 3201, French 2200, French 3200 and French 3201, World Geography 3202, World History 3201, Math 1204, Math 2204, Math 3204, Math 3103, Math 2205, Math 3205 and Math 3207. 

This service will supplement the face to face tutoring that is currently available in all schools. Tutors will be available during various evenings each week and on weekends to assist students with academic difficulties.  Students who have access to a computer and an internet connection will be able to receive online tutoring assistance from their homes or alternate venues. This online support is important as many students often encounter problems understanding key concepts during evening hours. 

To avail of this tutoring service, students need to follow these instructions:

3.Click on Online Tutoring outlined in blue.

4. Click on t he appropriate room from room # 1-9.

5. For “Login Name” please put in your full name followed by your community in brackets.

6. For the “Password” type in "help."

Room nine is the tutor coordinator room where you can obtain help with the tools of the virtual classroom or access guidance on topics such as study skills and time management. Students are encouraged to avail of this free online service as necessary.

Tutoring/Work Experience Program (TWEP) - Position Filled

Ms. Jenny Kennedy, (a former Stella Maris Academy graduate and  Tutoring For Tuition participant and now currently a third year MUN student who just recently  was accepted into the Education faculty) will be available to tutor students as needed on Tuesday - May 25, 2010.  

Jenny has been hired under the Tutoring/Work Experience Program (TWEP) and will be availalbe to help students until year end. Please give her a big welcome.

MATH REVIEW CLA SSES OFFERED: 

Starting on Monday May 3, 2010 with Level I I Math 2204/2205 at 3:00 Ms. Green will be offering extra help classes for those who wish to avail of this opportunity for final exam review. She will also be having a session with the Level I Math 1204 on Wednesday same time.
