Credit Counselling Services of Newfoundland & Labrador Scholarship:
Posted Nov. 14/11

November is Financial Literacy month in Canada. This is a time for Canadians to reflect upon their own financial knowledge, to become more aware of the various forums available for financial information gathering, and to be mindful that money and personal financial management skills are learned and acquired, and are not inborn. Therefore as individual consumers we should be curious and open to new informational concepts along with emerging trends in the marketplace. Individual financial success is fundamentally tied to how much we know about how money works, the marketplace where we carry out business, and the economy within which we live and work.

Credit Counselling Services of Newfoundland and Labrador invites students to  grow their own financial knowledge and always  contemplate and reflect upon the financial consequences of our  actions.

To participate Level III Students are asked to:

  • Compose and submit a 750-800-word essay on the topic “ What Post Secondary Education costs, and how we pay for it.”
  • The above noted item must be accompanied by a personal budget for a Post Secondary Student for the first two years of her or his education. This item must not be more than two pages long and should be a realistic reflection of all the expenses students are likely to encounter on their journey through any post secondary institution.

This scholarship is not based upon academic performance in anyway. Rather, it seeks out students with a genuine interest in their own financial future, irrespective of whether  or not they plan on attending a university or a trades focused institution.

DEADLINE:
Applications will be accepted by conventional mail only up to and including December 30th, 2011. An independent committee will assess each submission, and based upon the contents, the students ideas, concepts and arguments outlined in essay, will determine which has the most merit and is therefore is deserving of a  $500.00 award.

Cover letters while not necessary are acceptable. Each submission should be accompanied by the following contact information:

  • Students name
  • School
  • School address
  • School phone number
  • Teachers name
  • Post secondary plans
  • Date of your schools awards night
Essay and personal budgets should be sent to:

HORIZONS Scholarship -  Grade 9  -  2010 Application Process

Interested Grade 9 students of Stella Maris are invited to apply for HORIZONS – the province’s largest leadership development scholarship program. HORIZONS fosters youth leadership in Newfoundland and Labrador through recognition and opportunity. HORIZONS is the only program of its kind in North America, and is made possible through the generosity of the Fry Family Foundation in partnership with Memorial University of Newfoundland.

This year, the Fry Family Foundation is offering 50 scholarships to Grade 9 students across the province, each valued at $1200. Selected candidates are then welcomed into a leadership development program that extends into their time at Memorial University of Newfoundland. That time includes leadership conferences, community service projects, and invitations to Memorial events.

Eligibility and the Selection Process:

This year, all schools with a grade 9 class will be eligible to nominate one chosen student. Interested students may submit an application to the guidance counsellor or principal from their school for review, at which point the guidance counsellor/principal will chose one student to nominate to the University.

All applications received by the university will be reviewed to ensure a fair evaluation of all eligible applicants. Scholarships will be awarded based on  volunteer work, community involvement, and demonstration of leadership and team work ability.

In contrast to previous years, this year’s HORIZONS application form requires the attachment of a résumé as well as the attachment of a 500 word Discussion Statement written by the student that demonstrates their leadership ability.

Please Note:
No school is guaranteed a Horizons scholarship and all schools with a grade nine class are eligible to submit a nomination. The successful completion and acceptance of applications does not mean that the nominated student is a scholarship winner. All nominations received by the Friday - May 28, 2010 deadline will be considered by the HORIZONS Selection Committee who will pick 50 students deserving of the scholarships.

The Application Form can be found at http://www.mun.ca/leadership/getinvolved/programs/horizons/ in PDF format.

Check with Mr. Sutton if you require more information.

5 Steps to Winning Scholarships:

1.  Search

There are thousands of scholarships, awards and grants available to help finance your education! Many scholarships are awarded on academic achievement. However, other awards are awarded for athletic involvement, leadership, community service, area of interest and the institution you plan on attending.

Visit the websites listed on the Stella Maris Guidance website under Financial/Scholarships to find various scholarships and awards.

Check out the post secondary institution you plan to attend for possible scholarships and entrance awards.

Search online frequently using a free search tool like Studentawards.com (login required).   Other sites are listed on the Guidance web link.

Talk to your parents and/or relatives – they may be members of a club or organization or their employer may offer awards to family members.

Check out the Scholarship Bulletin Board located outside the Guidance Office. Check with the Guidance Counsellor often.

2.  Apply

Complete the appropriate scholarship application form. Keep a copy.

Do you meet the requirements as outlined on the application?

Apply well before the application deadline.

Mail your application before the deadline (a late application may not be accepted).

Keep extra letters of recommendation and transcripts on hand (it will save you time when applying for more than one award.

Follow-up with award sponsor before the deadline to make sure your application was received.

3.  Write the Essay

Write that essay; if an essay is a requirement, it may be the deciding factor.

Give yourself plenty of time.

Read the instructions carefully, and seek advice from a family member, friend, teacher or counsellor.

Go for quality, rather than quantity.

Use clear and concise language and avoid the use of slang.

Review your essay. Read it aloud. Refine it.

Proofread! Better still, have someone read and proofread your essay.

Keep a copy on file - with a few changes you may be able to use it for another scholarship.

4.  Get the Money

Make sure you meet all the conditions to receive the money: full-time enrolment, maintaining residency, institution you are attending, etc.

If you move, advise the scholarship donor of your new address.

If you are required to attend an awards ceremony, luncheon, etc., be   there, be gracious and dress appropriately.

Thank the donor, when appropriate.

5.  Maintain your scholarship potential

Keep your marks, athletics, leadership and volunteer work at an outstanding level and continue to look for scholarships as you progress through your studies.

Be positive.  Believe in yourself and in your chances of winning a scholarship. It takes hard work and time, but the rewards are well worth the effort.

8 Tips for Submitting a Great Scholarship Application:

1. Passion for the Subject - Only apply for an award if you actually have an interest in the subject matter. Your passion or disinterest will be reflected in your writing.

2. Research - Do the appropriate background work and find out exactly what a specific scholarship panel is looking for. Read the rules and regulations / terms and conditions.

3. Clarity of Thought - Be clear and concise. “How” you communicate is just as important as “what” you’re trying to communicate. Answer the essay question and only provide relevant information. Do not go over the word limit count.

4. Not a Résumé - Your scholarship application essay is not a substitute for your résumé so don’t simply re-write your résumé in essay form. Don’t list, discuss! Expand on your personal experience and clearly articulate your goals.

5. Structure, Spelling & Grammar - Be aware of proper essay structure. Always double-check your spelling & grammar and have someone proof read your work.

6. References – Ideally, references should be professionals at your school or organization that can vouch for your participation. Inform your references and make sure that their contact information is up to date. Assume that the scholarship administrator will check your references.
7. Complete All Requirements - Follow the instructions and make sure that you have collected and provided all the required materials. Making a checklist of all the elements will help.

8. Don’t miss the application deadline and apply early - Don’t Procrastinate. Give yourself plenty of time to fill out the application and to gather required documents (reference letters and transcripts).
