Encounters with Canada 2012 - 2013:
(Posted April 18/12)
Encounters with Canada is our country’s largest and foremost youth forum! Every week of the school year, 120 to 148 teens from across Canada (ages 14 to 17) come to Ottawa. Here they discover their country through each other, learn about Canadian institutions, meet famous and accomplished Canadians, explore exciting career options, develop their civic leadership skills and live an extraordinary bilingual experience. Over 85,000 youth have lived the EWC experience, to date!
Here's some more information on the program. Registration is now started!!
What is Encounters with Canada
Encounters with Canada is a program of the Canadian Unity Council, a non-profit, nonpartisan organization. For nearly 40 years, the Council has worked to build greater understanding of the country, its regions, its institutions and its federal system among Canadians. Encounters with Canada brings together 14-17 year-old high school students from different backgrounds and regions in every province and territory for a special week in Ottawa. The goal is to let them discover Canada through each other and get a first-hand understanding of Canadian institutions. The first part of the program week focuses on Canadian institutions and includes visits to Parliament, the Supreme Court, museums and a guided tour of the National Capital Region. The second part is organized around one of ten sub-themes that include such subjects as law, science and
technology, business and entrepreneurship, journalism and communications etc. Students take part in a range of activities that include group discussions, presentations by guest speakers who are active in the field that the group is studying and theme-related visits and tours.
Encounters with Canada track record
Encounters with Canada will celebrate its 20th anniversary in 2002. Its staff and volunteers have many years of experience working with young people. Since 1982, when the program began, Encounters with Canada has welcomed 60,000 young people. During 24 weeks of the school year, it receives about 130 students a week from across the country, or about 3,000 young people a year. Since it started, 2000 high schools across the land have sent students to Encounters with Canada. Much of the program content is the result of suggestions from an advisory committee of officials from each provincial and territorial education ministry.
Close Supervision
Participants receive constant attention and supervision in a planned environment.
Here is how things work during a typical week:
· When young people arrive in Ottawa, they are met at the airport, train station or bus station by a van or a school bus and Encounters with Canada staff. They are taken to The Terry Fox Canadian Youth Centre, which is owned by the Canadian Unity Council. The Centre is an especially designed facility in a residential neighbourhood. It offers accommodations, a full cafeteria, meeting rooms and resources such as the “Internet Café” where young people can mingle and go on line.
· In the Centre, young people can count on an experienced staff to provide any needed assistance. At all times, a staff experienced in relating to young people is present in the Centre.
· For routine health matters, the Centre has an infirmary and a registered nurse visits every day.
· Every week, six volunteer teachers from schools across Canada arrive with each new intake. The young participants are organized into six groups, each supervised by a teacher. When they go off-site for a meeting or activity, they are under a teacher’s supervision.
· When the week ends, each young person is taken back to the airport, train station or bus station by a staff member for his or her return trip. To sum up, constant supervision by trained and caring adults is a hallmark of Encounters with Canada. We acknowledge the financial support of the Government of Canada through the Exchanges Canada Program, a part of the Department of Canadian Heritage, which pays transportation costs for participants.
Theme Weeks
Encounters with Canada offers eleven different one-week programs of Canadian studies at the Terry Fox Canadian Youth Centre in Ottawa. To participate in the program, students must contact their schools or regional coordinators to obtain a registration form. If they are eligible, they can choose from one of the eleven following theme weeks:
Journalism and Communications
Business and Entrepreneurship
Royal Canadian Mounted Police
Students who have been accepted into the program stay at The Terry Fox Canadian Youth Centre, a conference centre equipped with dormitories, kitchen, cafeteria-auditorium, resource centre, meeting rooms and administrative offices. Throughout the week, group leaders guide participants through each of the activities included in their week of studies.
To participate in an Encounters with Canada week, you must:
be 14-17 years of age when you take part
be Canadian citizen or landed immigrant
be enrolled in an educational institution recognized by the Ministry of Education in your province or territory
obtain authorization from a parent or guardian
obtain the recommendation from your school
Cost of registration and financial assistance: The cost of registering for the 2012-2013 Encounters with Canada program is $675 for the one week program. The Province will contribute $100.00 reducing the total cost to $575.00

Education Incentive Program
Posted Feb. 15/12
NL Housing is pleased to announce increased funding for its Education Incentive Program. The eligible monthly incentive has increased to $50 for each child and/or adult student or dependent attending high school or a postsecondary institution, which is double the $25 per student offered previously. Eligible grades have also expanded to now include grades seven through nine, in addition to high school (levels 1, 2, 3 or 4). In 2006, as a partner in the province’s Poverty Reduction Strategy, Housing provided funding for the Education Incentive Program for its
tenants. The Program has provided a much-needed financial bonus to many families with children attending school or a post-secondary institution.
Who is eligible?
Any Housing leaseholder with a child or dependent attending grade seven through high school (levels 1, 2, 3, or 4) or any household with an adult or dependent attending a post-secondary institution or enrolled in an Adult Basic Education Program.
How much money will I receive?
Eligible tenants will receive $50 for every month that each child and/or adult student is in school. This will be issued by cheque to the leaseholder.
When will I receive the refund?
For those with children in high school, payments will be made twice a year, at the end of the normal school terms, which would be January and June. For those in post-secondary institutions, the payments will be paid at
the end of each semester. For example, at Memorial University, the semesters end in April, August and December.
How do I apply?
Housing will need a letter from the school for each child and/or adult stating the student was in full-time attendance and the exact date of the school term for which you are requesting the incentive funding. Contact your Housing Administration Officer (HAO) to find out.

What is Anger? Posted March 18/11 Anger is a natural emotion. It's nature's way of telling us that something in our lives has gone haywire. Anger occurs as a defensive response to a perceived attack or threat to our well-being. In addition to psychological changes, like any emotion, anger is accompanied by physiological changes. When you get angry your adrenaline flows, your heart rate increases, and your blood pressure escalates. The phrase, "I'm so mad my blood
is boiling" isn't that far from true when you fly into a rage!
If you want to find out some ways to deal with your anger, check out the following website:
or chat with Mr. Sutton about ways to identify the root of your anger and some useful methods for practising self-control. All sessions are confidential.
"Anybody can become angry - that is easy; but to be angry with the right person, and to the right degree, and at the right time, and for the right purpose, and in the right way - that is not within everybody"s power and is not easy." - Aristotle |

International Women's Day - March 8, 2011
Posted March 4/11
The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador, with the Department of Education and our Province's schools, is proud to recognize and celebrate the 100th annual International Women's Day on March 8.
International Women's Day was first officially celebrated on March 19, 1911. Today, International Women's Day is recognized by countries throughout the world and celebrates the economic, political and social achievements of women past, present and future. International Women's Day is now celebrated annually on March 8.
Around the world women and men, girls and boys, celebrate International Women's Day with parties, educational initiatives, parades, music, dance and art. The United Nations has declared the 2011 theme of International Women's Day as "Equal access to education, training and science and technology: Pathway to decent work for women."
100 years ago, when International Women's Day was first established, women faced discrimination and did not have many of the same rights as men. Since 1911, around the world, women's rights have advanced in many ways. International Women's Day continues to be recognized not only to celebrate those advances, but to acknowledge that many people around the world including those in Canada experience inequality, discrimination, violence and lack of opportunity simply because they are women or girls. Until all people achieve equality, awareness and advocacy are needed to talk about the inequalities that continue to exist.
The 100th Anniversary of International Women's Day provides an opportunity for students and teachers to celebrate and remember past achievements. It is also an opportunity for students, teachers and parents to discuss women's issues, feminism and talk about how everyone can work to achieve true gender equality within our own homes, schools, communities and world.
Many organizations throughout Newfoundland and Labrador will celebrate International Women's Day with a variety of public events during the week of March 6-12, 2011.
Why International Women's Day is still important.
In the past, for example, women were not allowed to vote in elections, hold public office or receive the same pay as male workers. Around this time, many women workers were also protesting unfair pay and harsh working conditions. Striking women workers in America called for “Bread and Roses”- a slogan that is now synonymous with International Women's Day. Bread was symbolic of the women's desire for fair wages and roses were symbolic for their desire for decent working conditions.
Bread and Roses
By James Oppenheim
As we go marching, marching, in the beauty of the day,
A million darkened kitchens, a thousand mill lofts gray
Are touched by all the radiance that a sudden sun discloses
For the people hear us singing: bread and roses, bread and roses.
As we go marching, marching, we battle too for men,
For they are women's brothers and we march with them again.
Our lives shall not be sweated from birth until life closes;
Hearts starve as well bodies; give us bread, but give us roses.
As we go marching, marching, unnumbered women dead
Go crying through our singing our ancient cry for bread.
Small art and love and beauty their drudging spirits knew;
Yes, it is bread we fight for, but we fight for roses, too.
As we go marching, marching, we stand together tall;
The rising of the women means the rising of us all.
No more the drudge and idler, ten that toil while one reposes,
But a sharing of life's glories: bread and roses, bread and roses.

SELF-MUTILATION
SELF-MUTILATION
Definition:
Self-mutilation is the deliberate and direct injury of one’s body, primarily through tissue damage and without suicidal intent.
Who:
Typically begins in early to mid-adolescence. The average age is 14 years old and continuing with increased severity into late 20s. Women are often twice as likely to self-mutilate compared to men, mainly due to the suppression of unwanted feelings such as anger and aggression. However, people who self-mutilate come from all walks of life, ranging from age, gender, occupation and ethnicity.
Facts about Self-mutilation
1 Self-mutilation is an impulse disorder the same as eating disorders, shoplifting, and substance abuse.
2 Self-mutilators can have underlying personality or mood disorders and depression.
3 Self-mutilation appears to have a contagious affect, especially among youth peer groups.
4 Self-mutilation is a maladaptive mechanism by which individuals cope with painful emotions.
5 Behaviors often include cutting, burning, hitting, poking, hair pulling, and head banging; the most common expression is cutting.
Warning Signs:
Recognizing such behavior may be difficult because of the secretive nature of the behavior. However such signs may indicate other issues such as depression or abuse:
1 Frequent or unexplained scars, cuts, bruises, or burns (often on arms, thighs, and abdomen) or broken bones (fingers, hands, wrists, toes).
2 Consistent, inappropriate use of clothing designed to cover scars.
3 Secretive behavior or spending more time isolated.
4 General signs of depression.
5 Social and emotional isolation or disconnectedness.
6 Substance abuse.
7 Possession of sharp instruments.
8 Indications of extreme anger, sadness, or pain.
9 Extreme risk taking behavior resulting in injuries.
Tips for Helping Someone who Self-mutilates:
1 Create evidence that positives exist.
2 Be patient.
3 If resistance is present, give opportunity to explain the same.
4 Be empathetic to emotional turmoil.
5 Be non-judgmental.
6 Offer support and validation of his/her feelings.
7 Allow the person to express what s/he is comfortable talking about.
8 Offer to help the person find professional mental health support.
If you or someone you know self-mutilates or uses self-harm behaviours please talk to Mr. Sutton or contact the following resources:

EDUCATION WEEK 2011:
Posted Feb. 14/11
Education Week in Newfoundland and Labrador is scheduled for March 6-12, 2011.
This year’s theme is I Think. I Can. – iThink. iCan! • Penser, c’est pouvoir. – iPenser. iPouvoir!
“The purpose of Education Week is to celebrate education and to encourage parents, community members and other educational stakeholders to become more involved with education, along with students and teachers,” says Lily B. Cole, President of the Newfoundland and Labrador Teachers’ Association. “The classic theme I Think. I Can. – iThink. iCan! is broken down into separate sentences for emphasis and combined with the popularity of technological devices such as iPhones and iPads. The words of the philosopher Descartes’ famous quote “I think, therefore I am” also comes into play as does the children’s book, The Little Engine That Could. The theme will encompass other elements with three sub-themes of Technology, Community and Personal Development.”
The opening ceremonies for Education Week 2011 will take place on Monday, March 7 at 10:00 a.m. via webcast to allow schools across the province to participate.
The Newfoundland and Labrador Teachers’ Association sponsors and organizes Education Week in this province. The NLTA has been sponsoring Education Week since 1936 and the event is organized by a provincial committee of teacher volunteers.
Information about Education Week 2011 can be viewed at www.nlta.nl.ca.

The RADHOC Youth Leadership Conference:
(Posted Feb. 14/11)
A Unique Approach to Fostering Socially Just High School Students
Memorial University is the home to an abundance of social justice groups, all working hard to create local and global change on a number of diverse, but connected issues. Four years ago, campus leaders came together to agree on two main ideas: first, they recognised the potential of collaboration and partnership, and second, they recognised the need for a strong, innovative approach to high school outreach. RADHOC Youth Leadership Conference was born.
The coalition is now planning their fifth conference, which will be held March 25-26th, 2011.
RADHOC Youth Leadership Conference.s acronym represents Responsibility, Action and Development: High School Outreach Champions - and it is “champions” for social justice that the conference aims to create. The goal? To reach students at the high school level with global education, skill development, and the confidence they need to become the leaders of tomorrow.
The RADHOC Youth Leadership Conference is a one-of-a-kind initiative in our province. The two-day conference is Newfoundland and Labrador’s only human rights and international development conference, and one of very few youth conferences that is completely inclusive and free of charge.
During the conference, participants will be provided with all meals and accommodations, and transportation costs will even be reimbursed by the Committee where possible. As leaders have continued to develop on campus and in Newfoundland and Labrador.s high schools, RADHOC has evolved in parallel. This year.s conference will have an even higher capacity and greater reach than past conferences, welcoming 100 students from high schools in Newfoundland and Labrador, as well as Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and Prince Edward Island. The coalition has strengthened with the years, and currently unites students from eight participating local organisations: MUN Oxfam, Engineers Without Borders MUN, War Child MUN, MUN-Hope, MUN-Amnesty, Project Green, Students for Literacy and the Global Citizenship Initiative Inc. The
diversity of the coalition allows students to acquire an in-depth understanding of important issues including (but not limited to!) climate change, women.s rights, fair trade, child soldiers, and HIV/AIDS. Additionally, RADHOC can also be identified by its dedication to certain principles. All content – be it an educational session, a skill building session, a workshop, or a community action – must adhere to five conditions. (As the saying goes, „there.s no “I” in team.... but there are several involved in RADHOC!)
Interactive: Students learn best from each other, and from networking together
Impact: As a two-day conference, 100% of content must have impact!
Inspirational: RADHOC hopes to reinforce the Champions. sense of optimism and enthusiasm
Innovative: Our world is changing every day; RADHOC encourages students to look at the world through innovative eyes. Furthermore, all content and sessions are uniquely developed by the committee and the coalition specifically for the Champions! Independence Building: At the end of the conference, the Champions depart with the knowledge and skills to make great change in their communities.
The participants of the RADHOC Youth Leadership Conference are empowered. They leave the conference with new knowledge, skills, peer networks, and a true RADHOC spirit that cannot be equalled by any other experience. RADHOC alumni return to their schools, their communities, and their provinces with everything they need to make positive change in our global community. They are the leaders of tomorrow.
The 2011 Conference will take place March 25-26, 2011 at Memorial University in St. John’s, NL. Student registration has now begun, and is available at www.radhoc.ca. For inquiries of any kind, the Committee would love to talk to you at radhoc@gmail.com.

Strengthening Families for the Future
Posted January 27/11
The Mental Health Promotion & Addictions Prevention program are pleased to sponsor and present Strengthening Families for the Future. A skill based prevention program, this program is designed for families with children between the ages of eight and eleven. It is an internationally recognized family and parent-strengthening program that has been found to significantly reduce problem behaviors, delinquency, alcohol and other drug abuse in children, and to improve social skills and school performance.
The Strengthening Families group is a powerful family change program because it involves the whole family, not just parents or children alone. Strengthening Families will help families build on skills to handle potential problems.
Families will meet together for three hours, once a week, on Tuesdays, starting in mid-March, 2011 and continuing for 13 consecutive weeks at Key Assets on LeMarchant Road. Each week begins with a shared meal, followed by separate sessions for parents and children. Each session ends with the family practicing together some of the skills they have learned. Materials are provided each week to help families reinforce skills at home.
The goals of the program are:
To reduce children’s or adolescents’ intention to use alcohol or other drugs, and to reduce behavioral problems
To increase children’s resiliency and life skills, including communication, resisting peer pressure, coping with feelings, and problem solving;
To increase positive and effective parenting skills
To improve family communication
Referrals must be received by Feb. 17, 2011.
Families who may be interested in being involved in this program should contact Mr. Sutton at 438-2361 for more information.

Take Ownership of Future Career Plans During Career Week
Residents throughout Newfoundland and Labrador are encouraged to take ownership of their career plans during Career Week, November 15 -19. The 2010 theme for Career Week is Expand Your Horizons-Own Your Future!
"Career Week is dedicated to promoting career awareness and reminding career seekers to connect with the people, programs and resources needed both to develop skills for work and to build rewarding careers," said the Honourable Susan Sullivan, Minister of Human Resources, Labour and Employment. "With all signs pointing to a very optimistic future here in our province, individuals are encouraged to take ownership of their future career plans, and utilize programs and services offered by the Provincial Government to support them along their journey."
The Department of Human Resources, Labour and Employment offers a suite of services to ensure that Newfoundlanders and Labradorians have the information they need to make wise career decisions – information about skills, education and training requirements – to make the connections needed to build successful and rewarding careers.
These services include online resources such as JobsinNL, which hosts employment opportunities available here in Newfoundland and Labrador; LMIWorks, a provincial labour market and career information website; a nation-wide toll-free labour market and career information hotline (1-800-563-6600); a Career Work Centre network consisting of 14 community-based resources and 12 Department of Human Resources, Labour and Employment offices to serve the career and employment needs of residents; skills development supports; the Graduate Employment Program; and, apprenticeship and wage subsidy supports.
"Our Career Work Centres and offices will be hosting activities throughout Career Week to showcase some of the resources and supports available to assist all residents of the province with informed educational and career planning," said Minister Sullivan. "Individuals, community partners and employers will participate in activities that include on-the-spot services for resume and interview assistance, and promotion of the recently launched HR Manager, an online toolkit for employers. By highlighting the various programs and services our government provides we will inform residents of how we can help them along their chosen career path from beginning to end."

Bullying Prevention Week (Nov. 14 - Nov 20, 2010)
Bullying is when a person is picked on over and over again by an individual or group. Guys and girls who are bullied may find their schoolwork and health suffering. Both guys and girls can be bullies. Bullies may be outgoing and aggressive or a bully can appear reserved on the surface, but may try to manipulate people in subtle and deceptive ways. For younger kids, the best way to solve a bullying problem is to tell a trusted adult. For teens, though, the tell-an-adult approach may not be as easy to do. You should remember though that adult’s in positions of authority — parents, teachers, or coaches — can often find ways to resolve dangerous bullying problems without the bully ever learning how they found out about it. If you're in a bullying situation that you think may escalate into physical
violence, try to avoid being alone (and if you have a friend in this situation, spend as much time as you can together). Try to remain part of a group by walking home at the same time as other people or by sticking close to friends or classmates during the times that the bullying takes place. It may help to talk to a guidance counsellor, teacher, or friend — anyone who can give you the support you need. Talking can be a good outlet for the fears and frustrations that can build when you're being bullied. Mr. Sutton is available to chat about your fears and concerns at any time. He can be contacted by telephone at (709) 438 - 2361 (Extension 26) or by email at wilfredsutton@esdnl.ca.

TUTORING FOR TUITION
September 2010
Note to Parents & Guardians:
The Tutoring for Tuition program provides Level I, II and III students with the opportunity to obtain a post-secondary tuition voucher by providing tutoring services to students from K-12 in all areas. Parents/guardians, who feel this service would be beneficial, are asked to submit their child’s name for tutoring assistance to their homeroom teacher or Mr. Sutton (Guidance Counsellor). Tutoring services are available at the school from 2:45 – 3:45 Monday through Thursday.
Note to Tutors & Learners:
Please try to make the best of this opportunity to learn by being availabe to work with one another during the week. Those who have signed up to be tutored should make every effort to be available, likewise tutors have an equal obligation to be available to the learner. It works best when both parties consistently communicate and co-operate. Tutors are reminded to pass in Learning Journals (signed by both the Tutor and Learner) and Time Sheets at the end of each month. If you have any questions or concerns, check with Mr. Sutton.

Students Against Drinking & Driving (S.A.D.D)
Newfoundland & Labrador
September 2010
________________
SADD was founded as Students Against Driving Drunk in 1981 in Wayland, Massachusetts, and has grown to become a dominant peer-to-peer youth education and prevention organization with thousands of chapters in middle schools, high schools and colleges across North America and beyond. In 1997, in response to requests from SADD students themselves, SADD expanded its mission and name and now sponsors chapters called Students Against Destructive Decisions. SADD continues to endorse a firm "No Use" message related to use of alcohol and other drugs. With its expanded focus, SADD now highlights prevention of all destructive behaviours and attitudes that are harmful to young people, including underage drinking, substance abuse, impaired driving, violence, and suicide.
SADD’s unique approach involves young people delivering education and prevention messages to their peers through school - and community-wide activities and campaigns responsive to the needs of their particular locations. Projects may include peer-led classes and theme-focused forums, teen workshops, conferences and rallies, prevention education and leadership training, awareness-raising activities (i.e. Mock Accidents & Mock Trials) and legislative work. Independent studies have shown that students in schools with an established SADD chapter are more aware of and informed about the risks of underage drinking, other drug use, and impaired driving. Students in schools with a SADD chapter are also more likely to hold attitudes reflecting positive reasons not to use alcohol.
At Stella Maris Academy we strive to foster and enhance these positive attitudes. Students will be given an opportunity this year to participate in several SADD activities and with the help and support of our local police, medical and emergency professionals, we hope to stage and learn from a “mock accident” on school grounds, later this Fall.
Interested students should contact Mr. Sutton to find out more and to see how they can become involved.
Tentatively planned for Thursday - October 28, 2010.
More details to follow.

Love School enough to stay forever? (or at least longer than you need)
Did you know that if you don't do the right courses you may have to return to high school for a fourth year? That can be costly - according to Statistics Canada, taking that year could cost you $50,000 in lost earnings over your life time. Worst still, if as an adult you have to return to high school it can cost you even more because adult basic education in a private school can cost upwards of $7000 in tuition alone! Plan carefully and it will mean more money in your pocket and you'll be on your way to where you want to be sooner!

Youth Retention and Attraction Strategy - NL
May 6, 2010
Through the Youth Retention and Attraction Strategy, the Provincial Government has committed $80,000 over the next three years to increase young people’s awareness about on-the-job safety through the Passport to Safety program.
“This investment was made in response to feedback from many young people who said making workplaces safer and healthier was one of their priorities,” said the Honourable Susan Sullivan, Minister of Human Resources, Labour and Employment and Minister Responsible for Youth Engagement. “The Provincial Government shares their commitment to accident prevention, and we feel that making the Passport to Safety online resource freely available to young Newfoundlanders and Labradorians will contribute significantly towards building a stronger safety culture within the province.”
Passport to Safety is a national health and safety awareness program developed by Safe Communities Canada that aims to revolutionize thinking among youth about on-the-job safety. Tthrough Passport to Safety
young people can complete an on-line safety test that will help them build their workplace safety knowledge, as well as their confidence in recognizing unsafe work environments and exercising their rights and responsibilities at work. After completing the program, youth will earn a certificate that they can attach to their resumes. Passport to Safety is intended to become a foundation on which youth can build all the other essentials required to be safer and healthier workers.
The Passport to Safety program will be available to high-school aged youth in Newfoundland and Labrador throughout the 2010-11 to 2011-12 period. Young people can access the program by visiting http://www.passporttosafety.com/nl where they can sign up for an account.

Government of Canada: Message - International Year of Youth
(Posted August 12, 2010)
Five years ago, when I assumed the post of governor general,I made youth one of my mandate priorities. Throughout my visits from coast tocoast to coast, I have had the immense privilege of meeting with youngCanadians from all walks of life. Along the way, I have discovered a generation of passionate, daring young people whose imagination knows no bounds. Young people who recognize that diversity and individual differences are a great source of mutual pride and enrichment. I have also been impressed by young people's ability to come up with solutions and to create networks of solidarity. In the face of every challenge, they represent a promise of renewal. They are agents of change, a living strength that wants to grow, to have its voice heard and to find its place in the heart of our communities.
International Youth Day has a special significance this year, as it also marks the beginning of the United Nations' International Year of Youth. We should make the most of this opportunity to applaud the essential support given by our young people, who are, of course, the leaders of today and tomorrow. I hope this is a memorable celebration for all!

The ABCs of being a good student:
A=Academics. Place a high priority on your studies. After all, your main job in school is to learn.
B=Behavior. Behave responsibly. Some of your actions now can have a long-lasting impact on your life.
C=Concentrate. Focus on your coursework; concentrate on those courses that are a little tough for you.
D=Determination. Not everything comes easy but you can accomplish anything if you're determined.
E=Excellence. Strive to be the best in everything you do.
F=Fun. Include time in your schedule to relax and have fun.
G=Grades. Earn high grades by studying each of your courses every day.
H=Honesty. Maintain a high ethical standard by staying honest in your studies. Don't copy or share homework or cheat on tests.
I=Involvement. Participate in school activities to get the full academic experience.
J=Joy. Immerse yourself in your studies and experience the true joy of learning.
K=Kindness. Be respectful to your fellow students and teachers.
L=Learning. Create a good learning environment at home by creating quiet place to study away from television, music, or other distractions.
M=Motivation. Develop rewards to motivate yourself if you find it difficult to study. For instance, if you study for two hours today, you can watch your favorite television program.
N=News. Pay attention to what's going on in the world around you. Read a daily newspaper, even if it's just the headlines and the first couple of paragraphs of an article. You'll be amazed at how many daily events tie in with class discussions.
O=Opportunities. Recognize class projects and assignments as opportunities to add to your knowledge and experience something new. You might find something that you really enjoy and will make a good career choice.
P=Positive. Be a positive thinker. You can accomplish a lot if you believe in yourself.
Q=Quality. Always turn in your best work. The quality of your work says a lot about you. It also establishes good habits that will serve you well in your career.
R=Rest. Adequate rest is needed to take full advantage of your classes. Staying up late to cram for a test usually doesn't result in a higher grade.
S=Study. Study a little each day for every course. When exam time rolls around, you won't be trying to catch up on all your studying.
T=Time. Manage your time responsibly. Make sure you make time for each class and for each project or assignment.
U=Unusual. Don't settle for always doing the usual thing. Use your creative abilities to try new things. Take new classes and explore new topics.
V=Valiant. Make a valiant effort to do your best in your classes. You may not be successful at all subjects, but at least you will know you tried.
W=Want. Always want to learn and to learn more about the subjects you study. A subject that may be boring on the surface may be very interesting as you learn more details.
X=X'ing. When taking multiple choice tests and x'ing your answer, be sure to read the question and all the possible answers completely. Don't treat multiple choice tests as multiple guess tests.
Y=Youthful. Establishing an interest in various subjects will keep you young throughout your life. Researchers have found that most of those people who enjoy life have a common, ongoing interest in learning new things.
Z=Zeal. Approach all you do with zeal, a passion for learning and accomplishing as much as possible in your life.

5 Steps to Winning Scholarships
1. Search
There are thousands of scholarships, awards and grants available to help finance your education! Many scholarships are awarded on academic achievement. However, other awards are awarded for athletic involvement, leadership, community service, area of interest and the institution you plan on attending.
Visit the websites listed on the Stella Maris Guidance website under Financial/Scholarships to find various scholarships and awards.
Check out the post secondary institution you plan to attend for possible scholarshipsand entrance awards.
Search online frequently using a free search tool like Studentawards.com (login required). Other sites are listed on the Guidance web link.
Talk to your parents and/or relatives – they may be members of a club or organization or their employer may offer awards to family members.
Check out the Scholarship Bulletin Board located outside the Guidance Office. Check with the Guidance Counsellor often.
2. Apply
Complete the appropriate scholarship application form. Keep a copy.
Do you meet the requirements as outlined on the application?
Apply well before the application deadline.
Mail your application before the deadline (a late application may not be accepted).
Keep extra letters of recommendation and transcripts on hand (it will save you time when applying for more than one award.
Follow-up with award sponsor before the deadline to make sure your application was received.
3. Write the Essay
Write that essay; if an essay is a requirement, it may be the deciding factor.
Give yourself plenty of time.
Read the instructions carefully, and seek advice from a family member, friend, teacher or counsellor.
Go for quality, rather than quantity.
Use clear and concise language and avoid the use of slang.
Review your essay. Read it aloud. Refine it.
Proofread! Better still, have someone read and proofread your essay.
Keep a copy on file - with a few changes you may be able to use it for another scholarship.
4. Get the Money
Make sure you meet all the conditions to receive the money: full-time enrolment, maintaining residency, institution you are attending, etc.
If you move, advise the scholarship donor of your new address.
If you are required to attend an awards ceremony, luncheon, etc., be there, be gracious and dress appropriately.
Thank the donor, when appropriate.
5. Maintain your scholarship potential
Keep your marks, athletics, leadership and volunteer work at an outstanding level and continue to look for scholarships as you progress through your studies.
Be positive. Believe in yourself and in your chances of winning a scholarship. It takes hard work and time, but the rewards are well worth the effort.

TURNINGS PRESENTATION - Tuesday - JUNE 1, 2010
Mr. Ron Fitzpatrick of Turnings will be at SMA on Tuesday June 1, 2010 at 10:00 AM to present on drug use in our province.
From the "Turnings" Website:
"Turnings" is actively involved in trying to raise awareness among youth, educating them to the dangers and consequences of drug use and abuse by engaging ex-offenders to tell their stories. While the primary goal of Turnings is to address the needs of ex-offenders, we very much understand the importance of prevention. For that reason our in-school education programs use the experience of ex-offenders to explain the consequences of bad decisions early in life.
