English Language Arts 2009-2010
Tues. March 15
Grade 6
Students have now completed their Olympic Power Point Research Projects. They presented their research on the Smartboard. We are currently working on a process piece as a practice for CRT's. The Gr. 6 Students will be completing the Process Writing component of the CRT from Mar.23-26.

Grade 8
Students have now completed their Research Papers. They are currently engaged in Literature Circles. Each night students must read a chapter and complete a role. Please ensure that your child completes their role for homework. There is a place for parent's signature on the first page of your child's folder. The next day students present their work to the group. The 5 different roles are as follows.

1) Summarizer
2) Connector
3) Read Aloud Master
4) Characterist
5) Illustrator

Grade 9
Student have now completed their Research Papers. They are currently reading and analyzing the play Romeo and Juliet. Comprehension questions must be completed at the end of each Scene. Questions not finished in class must be completed for homework.

Grade 6
Students have started a Research Unit on the Olympics. We will be working with Ms. Chafe in the LRC. Today students chose their country and will begin to take jot notes tomorrow. The final product will be a Power Point Presentation. All work will be completed in class.

Grade 8 & Grade 9
Students are continuing with Research Papers and are now completing jot notes. Rough drafts are due on Friday Jan.22. We will be proofreading and editing rough drafts on Friday. Final drafts are due on Thursday Jan.28

Grade 6
Holes Test was given back today. Please sign and return to school as soon as possible. Spelling Unit #6 was distributed yesterday. Students worked on Spelling exercises in class for 20 mins. Test is on Fri. Jan.15. Please ensure exercises are completed by this date.
We will begin a Research Unit next week.

Grade 8
The Outsiders test was given back today. We began Research papers this week. The majority of the research, jot notes, rough drafts, proofreading and editing will be completed in class.

Grade 6
There will be a test on the novel Holes on Tues. Dec.15. Students must review questions this week in preparation for the test.  Also, students must complete the 2 questions given in class today. They did not have enough time to complete these ques. in class today.

1) Describe Camp Green Lake. Give specific examples and use as many details as possible.

2) Conflict is the struggle between  opposing forces. Describe the different problems and obstacles that Stanley Yelnats must overcome in this novel. Give specific examples and as many details as possible.

There will be a test on the novel The Outsiders on Tues. Dec.15. Students must review questions this week in preparation for the test. Also, students must finish 3 questions given in class today. They did not have enough time to finish these ques. in class.

1) Define conflict and discuss the main conflict in the novel The Outsiders. Be sure to classify the conflict, tell who is involved, tell why the conflict exists and how the conflict is resolved. Remember to use quotes from the novel to support your answer.

2) Define theme. Identify and discuss a major theme form the novel The Outsiders. Be sure to give quotes form the novel to support your answer.

3) Define point of view and discuss the point of view from which this novel is told. Why did Ponyboy write from his perspective and what advantage does the reader gain from this?

Grade 9

There will be a content quiz on the novel After the War on Tues. Dec.15. Students must review questions and vocab. this week in preparation for the test. Also, students will be writing an in-class essay on the novel After the War on Wed. Dec.16. On Monday a handout of the 7 essay topics was given. Students must be prepared for the essay with an outline of the essay, all supports and quotes with page numbers wrote up ahead of time. Review handouts on Literary Essay Format, Character Types, After the War Summary and Reference page and numbers to locate quotes and supports and evidence.

Essay Questions:

1) Identify one main theme Carol Matas has introduced in her novel. How has the theme been developed? Be sure to make specific reference to the novel.

2) Discuss the types of conflict presented in the novel After the War. Were these conflicts resolved? If so, discuss the resolutions.

3) Discuss the reasons why Ruth let her emotions "sleep" for a major part of the novel. Explain her "awakening" by discussing how it helps develop a theme for the novel.

4) Write a detailed character sketch of Ruth.

5) Imagery is an integral part of Carol Matas' novel. Discuss through the use of examples how Matas' powerful imagery presents a shocking overview of the Jewish experiences during the war. (refer to flashback episodes)

6) Read the final paragraphs on pages 134-135. Explain how you think the author is making a statement about life.

7) Review how Ruth has learned to deal with the obstacles she had to face throughout the novel. Explain how you think the author is making a comment how people deal with life's joys and sorrows. What can we learn from Ruth?
