Grade 8 English

These are 4 types of essays.

Descriptive      Narrative      Expository     Argumentative

Discuss that there are different ways to get one’s point across and that these methods are determined by several different things such as audience, purpose, individual style, and voice.

Descriptive essays reveal information about the subject through vivid description. This type of essay will use imagery, and figures of speech (such as metaphor, simile, personification, etc.) to help show the reader the perspective of the subject the writer wants portrayed.

Narrative essays use stories, or even a single story, to reveal the writer’s perspective to the reader. The tools used in this type of essay are characterization, usually first person point-of-view from the author’s perspective, dialogue, setting, etc. The difference between this and a short story is that the story is used to make a point. The “Idea” is the primary purpose for the story.

Expository essays explain things. Expository essays are similar to argumentative essays but do not focus on persuasion. These essays may use structures such as cause and effect, classification, compare and contrast, and process analysis. The whole reason is to make the topic clear to the reader.

Argumentative essays make direct claims. They establish their point by providing evidence to support it. Support for argument can be in the form of examples, analogies, facts, statistics, and evidence. These essays try to persuade the reader to take the writer’s perspective.
