(using MS Paint)

Each student will create an image of a room drawn in one-point perspective.

Students can use their completed room images in the creation of a poster or display.

Activities Prior to Computer Use:
Prepare instructions that lead students to the appropriate software program.  This can be in the form of a list of instructions on the chalkboard or on a poster.
                         Example: 1. Go to "Start"
                                         2. Choose "Accessories"
                                         3. Choose "Paint"

Also give the students a quick orientation of the program eg. toolbars, buttons, etc.

Activities While At The Computer:

Step 1:Open the "Paint" program from the accessories list of
                       Windows.

Step 2:Choose the rectangle button from the tool bar on the left
and place  a rectangle in the center of the drawing area.

Step 3: Draw a Point on the interior of the square from which the
perspective of the room will be drawn. This point will represent
the view of the room from which the observer is seeing it.

Step 4: Choose the "Line" button from the toolbar and draw a line that
connects the point in the square to one of the box's corners and
extends to the end of the drawing area.

Step 5: Repeat step 4 for the remaining corners of the rectangle.

Step 6:Choose the eraser button from the toolbar and erase the lines
inside the rectangle, leaving the point in place. HINT: Use the
Zoom button (magnifying glass) to make the image larger to
                insure clean erasing.

Step 7:Choose the "Line" button from the toolbar and draw a line from
the point accross one of the "Walls".  This line represents the
top of the door and should be closer to the "ceiling" that the
                        "Floor".

Step 8:Draw lines from the "door top" to the floor line parallel with each
other and forming the two sides of the door. NOTE: keep these lines
close together  thus making allowances for perspective. Erase lines
that do not compose door frame.

Step 9:  Repeat the steps for drawing a door on the opposite "Wall" and add
another line originating from the point and running along the
wall--creating a window. Erase lines that do not compose window
                frame.

Step 10: It is now time to let the students explore their options. Get the
students to complete drawing their rooms by finishing door trim,
decorating their room, adding mouldings, tiles on the floor, etc.
Explain that all lines that run from the "front" of the room to the
"back" of the room have to come from the point on the back wall.
All other lines (those that are horizontal or vertical) shough be
                    straight and perpendicular.

Example: Here the lines that compose the "length" of the floor tile come from the point while the lines that compose the "width" of the floor tile are perpendicular to side of the drawing area and run parallel to each other.

Step 11: Add Colour. Using the "Paint Bucket" button , and choosing the appropriate colours from the "Colour Bar," fill in colours of the room.

Activities After Use of Computer:

Complete your rooms using Microsoft Paint (or a similar software program). In doing this they will include unique decorations and design to personalize their images. ENCOURAGE CREATIVITY!

Supporting Activities:
Use your knowledge of one-point perspective to create the image of a room using traditional artistic techniques - paper, pencil, rulers, paint, etc.

Questions to ask once you've finished your room.
  Basic Construction
                                                      - do lines that run from the front to the back
                                                        come from the point?
                                                      - are horizontal and vertical lines straight and
                                                        perpendicular?
                                                      - are extra lines erased completely?
  Added Components
                                                      - do any of the extras added to the image
show a mastery of one-point perspective?
  Creativity
                                                      - does the image of the room reveal
                                                        creativity and/or individuality?
