Having completed this unit on Macbeth, students should be able to:

  1. Reveal a familiarity with the play that has been obtained through its reading.

  1. Write a character sketch of the main characters

  1. Define “tragedy” and “tragic hero” and decide to what degree this play meets these definitions.

  1. Describe the roles and functions of the minor characters.

  1. Identify and explain major themes and how they are developed.

  1. Define imagery and explain the extensive use of such images as sleep, clothing, disease, darkness, supernatural, and blood.

  1. Define and give examples of dramatic irony and discuss its use.

  1. Explain the “Porter scene” as comic relief and theme development.

  1. Know the motivation which led to Macbeth’s and Lady Macbeth’s downfall.

  1. Determine to what extent Macbeth is in control of his life and to what extent he deserves his demise.

  1. Appreciate the differences between the written text and the film version.

  1. Show a knowledge of key speeches, to be able to identify the speaker, the content and the context from which it is taken.

  1. Be aware of basic criticisms (critical reviews) of the play.
