Stage 2: Background Research and Experimental Design

Students must submit a two part written paper - Due Date: December 5, 2008

Requirements/Description:

Part 1. Research Paper

A complete library research study of the topic is to be conducted and a report, including bibliography, is to be submitted. This portion of the project will be at least 4 pages long (1000 words, not including photos, data and references). APA format must be used for references and there must be a minimum of 5 references – none of which can be web sites unless they are originate from the elibrary (ask your teacher for details).

Part 2. Experimental Design (attached to the back of Part 1)

  1. Hypothesis - Restate your hypothesis with an explanation of the specific aspects you are trying to investigate.
  2. Materials - A complete list of materials required to conduct the experiment (Materials). You must indicate where you intend to acquire these materials. State their location (home, lab, other) and include the quantity required. This may be done in table format.
  3. Methods - Provide a detailed explanation of how you will conduct the experiment to test your hypothesis (Methods). Be sure to state your expected sample size (no vertebrates may be used in any projects). If you intend to use living organisms, you will need to justify the number of samples you propose (generally a sample of 5 is acceptable – see Mr. Wells in room 211 if you have any questions).
