Information for Parents About Science Exams

In all three grades this year, the science exam will consist of two parts.

Part A is the unit test for the fourth unit, which all three grades started at the beginning of May.  In each grade, this test will cover two booklets only - the first one which is currently being quizzed, and the second which I am in the process of distributing to all classes.  What your children are telling you is true : NONE of the material from previous units will be on the exam!!!  The first booklet should be familiar to students already from the current quiz, some additional review material that will cover the second booklet will be distributed later this week.

Part B is a "scientific literacy" section which students in grades 8 and 9 will remember from last year.  It is an exam prepared by the School Board, not at the school level.  It will consists of a "Data analysis" section (where a simple experiment is described, results are reported, and students are asked to graph and interpret the results) and some "Case Studies", short texts to read on a science topic with comprehension questions.  This is not something you can "study" for, though some advance practice is obviously helpful.  We will do some practice in class in the last week before exams.  I the meantime, I will also post the same practice materials here as soon as I get a chance.

Anyway, the good news is that as far as preparation goes for the science exam, I think you can safely assume that exam preparation is this subject is comparatively moderate relative to other subjects, and if your child has done a good job of preparing for the current "4.1" quiz, his/her exam study for science is already well in progress.

Stay tuned for preparation materials on "Scientific Literacy"!
