Who's You???
Where did I grow up?
A simple question which opens most conversations between new acquaintances; especially for Newfoundlanders… I chuckle each and every time the question is asked of me and respond the only way I know how. I got older in Gander, Newfoundland and even older in St. John's. As for the growing up part; I'm still working on that.
Perhaps a better question for me is: Where do you call home? I've always considered Port-de-Grave to be to be my home… My roots are there; it is the community where I spent countless hours visiting grandparents and exploring the world. That rocky little town seemed to provide anchorage, even as the house I lived in changed.
Where did I go to school?
My long, and winding, road to higher education began at St. Joseph's Elementary in Gander. In October of my grade two year I transferred to Macdonald Drive Elementary where I stayed until I completed grade six. From there I made the long trek across the parking lot to the hallowed of halls of Macdonald Drive Junior High. Upon completion of grade nine I went to Prince of Wales Collegiate for grades ten, eleven and twelve…
(Here is where my road really begins to get bumpy…)
After high school I went to Memorial University of Newfoundland and convocated with an undergraduate degree in Biology and Math. I then went to The College of the North Atlantic to work on a diploma in Aircraft Maintenance Engineering Technology while earning a Commercial Pilots License from Gander Flight Training. It was then and only then that I discovered I was destined to teach, and returned to MUN to work on my education degree. My third degree from MUN came just this past year as I completed my bachelors' degree in special education… I truly feel that I have earned the right to say "BEEN THERE, DONE THAT".
What now?
Put simply… I now work with the special services department at the best school in the Eastern School District; St. John Bosco.
Sincerely,
Mr. L. K. Porter
