Below are some helpful "higher level" thinking questions that you may want to ask your child after he/she has read a portion of a book. I would suggest taking 1 or 2 of these questions and really talking about possible responses, rather than asking all of them the one night.
1. How does the main character feel in the story? How do you know this?
2. Would you act the same way as the main character in the story? Why or why not?
3. Do you agree with the actions of ___________? Explain.
4. What is your opinion of __________? Explain your thinking.
5. How do you feel about the ending of this chapter or book? Explain why you feel this way.
6. What is your opinion of this book? Explain.
7. Would you like to visit with any of the characters in this book? Explain.
8. What is another possible title for this book. Why would you call it this?
9. Did the author bold face any words in the story? (Example, What’s going on here?) Why do you think the author did this?
10. What does the author mean by the phrase “______________________”?
11. Do you think most children would like this book? Explain your thinking using details from the story or book.
