Macdonald Drive Junior High Band Concert Assignment
Name_______________________________
1. Write a “critique” of our band’s performance at the NLTA Christmas Suite, Wednesday, December7. Things to include in your comments should be your observations about:
- The pieces of music and their style: did the band successfully capture the intended style?
- Balance and blend: could you always hear the melody? Did the instruments sound good together?
- Dynamics: Were we careful to play with loud and softer dynamics?
- Articulation: legato, staccato, accents, attacks and releases: how were these musical elements used? Was there precision in the ensemble?
- Tuning: your section and the band overall; what did you notice?
- Tempo: Did the band follow the conductor and keep a steady tempo?
- Overall effect of the music; what do you think it communicated?
- The challenges of performing in this type of concert
- Your own observations about what it felt like/sounded like to you on stage
- What do you think we did well; what do you think we could have performed better?

2. Choose a performance from one of the other groups that you heard on Wednesday evening. Please comment on the performances using musical references such as tempos, dynamics, rhythms, tuning, balance, blend, overall effect of the performance, what you think they did well, and what you think they could work on to do better.

Instructions:
Each band student attends band with the Full Band class as listed on their individual timetable.
Each band student is to attend ONE small group pull-out class per cycle. These are the groups:
- Grade 7 Flutes
- Grade 7 Clarinets
- Grade 7 Alto Saxes
- Grade 7 Tenor Saxes, Trombones, Baritones, Tuba
- Grade 7 Trumpets
- Grade 7 Percussion
The Grade 8 and 9 students are combined for their small group classes.
These are the Grade 8/9 groups:
- Grade 8/9 Flutes and Clarinets
- Grade 8/9 Alto Saxes
- Grade 8/9 Trumpets
- Grade 8/9 French Horns, Tenor Saxes, Trombones, Baritones, Bass Guitar
- Grade 8/9 percussion
There are THREE different schedules to follow for the pull-out classes, BLUE, RED, GREEN. This is done so the students don’t come out of the same class each cycle, but rather spread their pull-outs over THREE cycles. Please make sure you know when your pull-out classes are held.
We will start with the BLUE cycle and follow it through to Day 7. After Day 7, we will start Day 1 on the RED cycle, and then follow it with the GREEN cycle. After Day 7 on the GREEN cycle, we will start again with the BLUE cycle.
- MAKE SURE YOU GO TO CLASS FIRST; CHECK WITH YOUR TEACHER BEFORE COMING DOWN TO PULL-OUT BAND CLASS. You are not allowed to miss tests/quizzes/in-class evaluations for band.
- Please let me know as soon as possible if you are not allowed to attend band class that day; I will mark you “excused.”
Take your instruments home; make some time for home practice to improve your skills and learn your band music. We all benefit when individual students contribute their best to the group.
THANKS FOR PARTICIPATING!!
