June
Students have completed writing and presenting their speeches.   Great job everyone.

May 11
We will have a novel test on Friday, Day 1.
Then students will write a persuasive essay (a speech).  This will be completed in class.

May 5
We have almost finished the novel we are reading.  
When finished, we will have a content quiz.  This may be late next week or the week afterwards.  

April 27
We are now completing an in-class novel study.

April
We are now completing a unit on Media Awareness.
For homework, students have a sheet to fill out after viewing an advertisement on television.  This is due on Friday, April 16.

March 23
Students are now completing an independent novel study.  Students have choices as to the work they can complete (poster, power point, SmartBoard activity, etc.)

Friday, March 5
We will have a poetry test on Tuesday (March 9th)
Students will be asked to read a poem (that they have not seen before) and answer 5 multiple choice questions and two or three long answer questions.

Students have a practice poem taken home for the weekend.  The poem is called "The Quilt".  If students find this difficult, bring it to class on Monday and we will complete it then.

The plane’s engine roared and screeched to a stop while everyone screamed.  This sentence appeals to our sense of hearing.

After reading the poems "Homework" and "The Dog ate my Homework" , pretend you have forgotten to do your homework.  Think of the wildest, silliest excuse and write it on a note for your teacher.

We are working through a poetry unit.  There will be a poetry test in about 2 weeks.


January
- The unit on the Underground Railway is finished.
- We have now started a Poety Unit.

December 18
-  in class we read a story about Harriet Tubman
- finish up to question 8

December 7
- in class we read a book about Harriet Tubman
- students are now completing research on the Underground Railroad
- we are completing a group project (a collage) on this
- students can find pictures/information and print them off and bring them in for our display

November 25
Students are reading their novels for independent reading.  Some students have started their power point presentation.
These will be presented to class later this month or early December

November 19
- Paragraphs are now completed and marks have been entered into Students Achieve
- We are now reading a novel for independent reading and we will be completing a power point presentation on this novel
- This will be ongoing for the next few weeks

November
Quite a few students have been out sick.  Therefore, the descriptive paragraph will continue as students return.  We are typing these on the computer as well.  As students finish, each student will be expected to choose a novel for independent reading.  Students can choose a book from my collection as I have access to a variety of books at different reading levels.  Or students can choose a book from home.  They should check with me first on their choice.

Wednesday, Oct. 21

- over the next few days, we will be working through a descriptive paragraph.
- most students have started this by completing a thought web.

Thursday, Oct. 15
Students are finishing their drawing for the story The Last Game.
Some students have not passed in their Thanksgiving paragraph


Thursday, Oct. 8
- please complete the paragraph on Thanksgiving for Wednesday, Oct. 14.

Monday, Oct. 5, 2009
- I am at an in-service today.
- students are reading the short story "The Last Game"
- please finish visual (the jersey) for homework if not completed during class time.

Wednesday, Sept. 30
- we finished the short story "The Teacher's Pet"
- students wrote (in class) a paragraph describing Marvin (the main character)

Friday, Sept. 25
We completed a Media Awareness unit on the computer today.
No homeork.
Enjoy the weekend.

Thursday, Sept. 24
We went to the library today to choose a novel for independent reading.  I will provide some class time each day for silent reading.

Monday, Sept. 21
We read a short story in class today. We will continue with this tomorrow.

Friday, September 18
- students finished their paragraph in class today
- we will be reading short stories next week
- we will also be selecting a novel for independent reading.  If you have a book at home please bring it in.  Otherwise we will get one from our library.

Wednesday, Sept. 16
- students are working on a paragraph describing their summer vacation.  We are taking jot notes and then this will be typed at school.
This will probably take us until Monday.


Monday, September 14

We are working through a spelling/vocabulary unit in class.
Tell me About You Journals should now be completed. (Most of this was done in class.)

Don't forget that it is picture day tomorrow.


September 10, 2009 (Thursday)
Today students started their Tell Me About You Journal.  This can be finished at home and returned on Monday.

Suggested Supplies:
-- One small or medium sized binder
-- Two exercise books (one for class notes and the other will be used as a journal)
-- a few loose leaf (no need to carry too many as this makes the binder heavy)
-- pencils, pens, coloring pencils
-- eraser
