e. Fur/Feathers: cats, dogs, and other pets are not allowed. We have a student for whom cat hair is life-threatening.
Homework Practices (April 18th, 2008)
Under the direction of our School Development Team, Cowan Heights Elementary has begun to develop guidelines around our homework practices. As we review the research available, the staff will be reflecting on homework, what, when, and why it is assigned.
Our first practice change relates to the days that homework is due. As a school community, we realize that the pace of family life has changed significantly in recent years and that it is important for families to have quality time together. We value and support family time and are demonstrating these beliefs by the following guidelines:
1. No homework/projects will be due on Mondays or the first day after a holiday.
2. There will be no tests on Mondays or the first day after a holiday.
From the research on homework, it is evident that one activity that has a very significant impact on academic progress is reading, reading for pleasure or for information. Reading to children or children reading themselves can support students' growth, particularly when they are interested in the material they are reading. We encourage reading as a valuable family activity and reading (non-subject related) will still be assigned on the weekends. Parents will still need to check the Friday agendas, however, for reading assignments, reminders of events, permission slips, etc.
Fees for events:
Transportation costs for field trips: The cost of hiring a bus is shared among all students whose class is going on the trip. If parents opt to transport their children in private vehicles, they may do so. However, the cost of the school transportation is not refunded. (Approved by School Council, April, 2007)
Students are not charged any additional fees to cover off the costs incurred by those students who are not able to pay.
When a field trip involves paying for tickets or entry fees, refunds can be made when costs are not incurred. For example, a student's non-attendance at a field trip to the Fluvarium means there is no ticket required. Therefore the student may be refunded the ticket portion of the field trip. (Approved by School Council, April 2007)
Computer Usage
Students are not permitted to use computers in the classroom during lunch times, recess, and early mornings before instruction begins. Internet Usage is monitored directly by a teacher in the room. Primary students are not permitted internet searching. Elementary students are not permitted internet searching without the presence of a teacher directly monitoring their searches. There is an "Acceptable Use of Information and Communications Policy" found at the Eastern School District Web Sites under "Policies".
Cell Phones
Students are not permitted to use cell phones during the school day. It is important that communications to home, particularly when a student might be sick, be monitored by staff. Those who carry them for use after hours are to keep them turned off and stored. The school assumes no responsibility for damage incurred to such equipment brought to school.
Cameras/Digital Cameras/Cell Phone Cameras
Students are not permitted to bring any cameras to school without the written permission of their parents, who must sign a form guaranteeing that the pictures will not be used inappropriately, such as posting to the web, etc. Permission will be given only for special occasions.
