Our children's program emphasizes physical fitness, cooperation, and simple Aikido techniques. Classes are taught in a disciplined yet fun setting, and include stretching, rolling, basic techniques, and games.

Aikido classes provide children with benefits in the following areas:
·       Personal Skills: discipline, focus, concentration, self confidence, and self awareness;
·       Social Skills: cooperation, tolerance, relating to others, and good manners;
·       Physical Skills: flexibility, agility, balance, stamina, and strength;
·       Cultural Skills: etiquette, Japanese customs, tradition, counting, language, and clothing.

Development of these skills help children improve in school, sports, and life in general. They learn early on that exercise on a regular basis reduces stress and anxiety in their lives. Classes are initially open to all students attending St. Matthew’s. Students are encouraged to develop sensitivity to their fellow students, to be patient with those who are less advanced, and accepting of those who process the training differently, and to carry that awareness into their lives outside of Aikido.

Parents of children who wish to join Aikido are encouraged to contact jimsinnott@gmail.com

Parents who wish to try Aikido themselves are encouraged to contact Derm McDonald at the Aikido Institute of Newfoundland.
