The Metro Region of the Eastern School District refers to all schools in the St.John’s and surrounding area. Schools in the Metro Region are delayed from opening and are closed by the Asst Director of Education when weather becomes a concern. Principals in these schools do not participate in the decision making process.

Many students in the St.John's area are not bussed to schools and those who do are not frequently exposed to limited access roads and steep treacherous hills.
Decisions about delayed openings and school closures in the Mobile System are made by the Principal of Mobile High School in consultation with the Bus Contractor. The Principal has this discretion because of the treacherous road conditions often associated with the many hills in the Southern Shore area. Students in this area do not have the luxury of alternate routes home. In every case an attempt is made to balance the safety concerns of children from Kindergarten to Level III and the necessity of keeping schools open.
Mobile High School has a clearly communicated protocol for dealing with school delays and closures which all students know and understand.
Students are encouraged to visit the Mobile website each morning for updates on school delays, closures, bus delays or bus departure times. Those without Internet access are encouraged to listen to the radio (VOCM) or call a friend who does have Internet access.
The weather can only play havoc when students are unaware or unsure of proper procedures.
The Mobile High School website has a feedback form for parents/guardians to express thier views on any aspect of school policies and practices. If you are satisfied with decisions made to date please let us know. If you have concerns please provide them as well. While we cannot guarantee everyone’s satisfaction we can strive to be as effective and efficient as possible in dealing with a matter that can have such dire consequences.
