Course Content Descriptors
Mathematics 1204 is the first of level of the new Senior High Mathematics Program with a core curriculum common to all Atlantic Provinces. The topics covered are: data management, network and matrices, patterns and relations, equations, trigonometry and both algebra and geometry. This course is recommended for students who achieved 60% or greater in grade nine math. (2 Math credits)
Mathematics 1206 is the first of three practical mathematics courses offered at the senior high level. The Practical Mathematics 1206 / 2206 / 3206 course sequence is intended for students who experience considerable difficulty with mathematics throughout junior high school. Students completing these courses in Practical Mathematics would receive a transcript indicating basic program. Students who take this stream are limited in their options for post secondary. Topics addressed in Math 1206 include: data management, equations, functional relationships, and trigonometry. (2 Math credits)
Canadian History 1201 - This course focuses on the history of Canada from pre-Confederation to the close of the 20th century. Topics: prelude to nationhood, the new nation, the Great War and its aftermath, a time of turmoil, Depression and War, a time of transition, contemporary Canada. (2 Canadian Studies credits)
Writing 2203 is designed to accommodate a wide range of student interests and abilities. It offers students an opportunity to explore writing as a means of personal expression as well as a method of communications. The course provides opportunities for students to develop a portfolio of written products. (2 OPTIONAL Language Arts Credits)
Science 2200/3200 This is a combined course with some students working on Science 2200 while others will challenge Science 3200. These courses will the basic science of everyday phenomena.
French 2200 - This course is intended to develop students' ability to acquire information and communicate their needs, desires and ideas in French. Topics treated include: family, home, friends, leisure activities and daily schedule. (2 Language Arts or Personal Development credits)
Canadian History 1201 - This course focuses on the history of Canada from pre-Confederation to the close of the 20th century. Biology 2201-This course is intended to introduce students to more biological principles and to lay the foundation for further studies in the discipline.
Chemistry 2202 - This course is an introductory chemistry course covering Stoichiometry, Chemical Bonding, and Organic Chemistry. Science 1206 is a prerequisite for this course. 2 Science credits)
Art Tech 1201-An online course that examines relationships among human perception, technology, and the creative process.
English 1201 is an academic course, designed for the majority of students entering Level I of senior high school. The study of language and experiences with a broad range of literature and media texts will enable students to reflect on their own learning strategies as they continue to develop confidence as language users.(2 CORE Language Arts credits)
English 1202 is an entry level course into senior high school designed for students who have demonstrated significant difficulties when it comes to reading and writing, speaking and listening. (2 CORE Language Arts credits)
Science 1206 is a multi-disciplinary course for academic science students divided into four unit. (1) Chemistry - names and formulas, reaction types, balancing chemical equations. (2) Physics - introduction into kinematics velocity and acceleration (3) Biology - sustainability of ecosystems (4) Earth & Space Science - weather dynamics. The course provides a transition between intermediate and high school academic science courses. It allows students to experience the different science disciplines so that they make appropriate decisions with respect to which sciences to pursue in Levels II & III. (2 Science credits)
English 1200 is an optional language course designed for students entering senior high school who have not developed the reading and writing strategies that enable them to decode, interact with, retain, interpret, or reconstruct print. The course aims to improve students' ability to make meaning from print materials and to respond to print through written, oral and visual expression. NOTE: English 1200 must be taken concurrent with English 1202. (2 OPTIONAL Language Arts Credits)
Career Development 2201– A course designed to provide students with the opportunity to explore changes that are taking place in the world of work. Students will examine the issues and trends that affect education, training and employment opportunities.
World History 3201– This is a public exam course. This courses focuses on the twentieth century. Topics: nationalism, industrialization, democracy, and socialism in the nineteenth century, imperialism and national rivalries; World War I and II, the impact of science technology, conflicting ideologies and future prospects .
World Geography 3200/3202 -This is a combined course. World Geog 3202 is a public exam course. Those who do not wish to challenge the public can write a school exam and receive . This course is designed to accommodate students who require a social studies world studies credit but would find an honors course very challenging. Topics: basic concepts of land and water forms, weather, climate, ecosystems, resources, population patterns and its impact on settlement, and urbanization.
Com Tech 2104-This is an introductory course in communications technology dealing with electronics systems, communications systems, networks, audio systems, graphic communication, animation, and marine communications.
Com Tech 3104- A more advanced course in communications technology involving analog and digital video and multimedia systems.
Physics 2204 - This course is intended to further study in physics by building on Science 1206. Core topics include Kinematics, Dynamics, Work and Energy, and Waves. (2 Science credits)
Chemistry 3202 - This course is a continuation of Chemistry 2202. Topics include Equilibrium, Acids and Bases, Thermochemistry, and Electrochemical changes.. Public exam course.

Biology 3201 - This course is designed to follow Biology 2201 and includes study of the following topics: Dynamics Equilibrium, Reproduction and Development, Genetic Continuity, Evolution and Diversity.. Public exam course
English 2202- This course is intended for students who continue to demonstrate difficulty with reading, writing, speaking, and listening. Experiences are based upon the interests and abilities of the students thereby providing support to meet their individual needs and diverse learning styles.
English 2201 - This is an academic course intended for students whose goals include post secondary academic study. English 2201 emphasizes analytical and critical thinking in a wide variety of styles
Experiencing Music 2200-This course is designed to assist students in responding emotionally and intelligently to a wide range of music representation of many styles and cultures.
Art Tech 1201-This course exams the relationships among human perception, technology and the creative process.
French 3200 - A continuation of French 2200. This course qualifies as a 3000 level Modern Language or Social Science requirement for M.U.N.
Canadian Economy 2203 is an introductory study of the Canadian economy. Topics will include: needs versus wants, organizational features of the Canadian business, effective consumer purchasing, management of personnel resources, consumer protection and corporate citizenship
Advanced Math 2205 This is a Level II advanced mathematics course designed for students who have demonstrated aptitude and considerable success with mathematics, especially Mathematics 1204. This course is recommended for students who achieved 75% or greater in Math 1204 (2 Math credits
Academic Math 2204 This is a Level II academic mathematics course designed for students who have
successfully completed Mathematics 1204. (2 Math credits)
Basic Math 2206– Topics include consumer situations, applications of trigonometry, statistics, and linear programming
World Religions 3101- A study of the living belief systems: Aboriginal Spirituality, Early Religions.
World Religions 3106- A study of living belief systems: Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, and Sikhism, Buddhism,

Mathematics 3207 (pre-calculus)-Prerequisite: Mathematics 2204/3204 or 2205/3205. This course is designed to introduce students to concepts needed for the study of further mathematics, particularly calculus. Students planning to attend post-secondary institutions are strongly advised to take this course. This course is recommended for students who achieved 75% or greater in Math 2205: Sequences, series, functions, trigonometry, complex numbers.
Mathematics 3103– This is a one credit optional course that cannot be used to fulfill the math requirements for graduation. It is designed for students with skill deficiencies who plan to do post-secondary math courses. Topics: number concepts, exponents, polynomials, algebraic expression, functions.

English 3202 - This course is intended to prepare students for lifelong learning by engaging them in practical and interesting learning experiences closely related to their lives and should provide support to meet their individual and diverse learning needs..
Theatre Arts 2200– This course focuses on the development of students’ personal resources, communications, and group skills, and leads to the acquisition of basic performance skills.
Enterprise 3205 - Designed mainly for students who wish to pursue an in-depth study of Enterprise Education by enabling them to formulate ideas, translate those ideas into action, and follow them through to a venture.
Physics 3204 - This course is designed to follow Physics 2204. The course includes the following topics: Force, Motion and Energy, Fields, Matter and Energy,. Public exam course
Consumer Studies 1202 - Introduction to the Canadian way of doing business, using technology in business and making career and consumer decisions.
Mathematics 3204 (academic) Prerequisite: Mathematics 1204. This is the third course in the academic sequence. It can be done before or after Math 2204. It covers the same topics as Math 3205, the main difference being the depth of treatment. Topics: Quadratics, exponential and logarithmic functions, circle geometry, rate of change and probability. This course is recommended for students who achieved 60% or greater in Math 2204 or Math 2205. Public exam course
Mathematics 3205 (advanced) Prerequisite: Mathematics 1204. This is the third course in the advanced sequence. It can be done before or after Math 2205. It is designed for students planning to study mathematics related fields at the post secondary level. This course is recommended for students who achieved 75% or greater in Math 2205. Topics: Quadratics, exponential and logarithmic functions, circle geometry, rate of change and probability. Public exam course
Mathematics 3206 (practical) Prerequisite: Mathematics 1206 or 1204. This is the third course in the practical sequence. It can be done before or after Math 2206. Topics: Patterns, Quadratics, exponential growth, circle geometry, and probability.
Environmental Science 3205 - This course studies the nature of environmental science. Also, using lectures, field trips and case studies, students study ecological concepts relevant to Newfoundland and the quality of life on the planet as a whole.
